Our Work in Lesvos

Transforming Camps into Communities Since 2015

In 2015, the Greek island of Lesvos became the epicenter of Europe’s refugee crisis, with over 500,000 refugees arriving in a matter of months. Movement On The Ground was founded here during this pivotal moment, and since then, Lesvos has been at the heart of our mission to transform refugee camps into communities.

Our innovative Camp to CampUs methodology, which began in Lesvos, integrates safety, security, and community-building to enhance the quality of life for residents. This approach includes providing access to education, vocational training, and social activities, all aimed at fostering self-reliance and integration. A cornerstone of this methodology is the active involvement of Community Volunteers, who are essential to the success of many of our programs. By participating in and leading initiatives such as skills-based trainings, sports, and social events, residents gain a sense of autonomy and ownership over their environment.

Why Lesvos Matters

Lesvos is where our journey began, and it remains a vital hub for our mission to turn crisis zones into thriving communities. The island serves as a powerful example of how a community-driven, holistic approach can transform the lives of displaced people, restoring dignity and fostering resilience. Our programs on Lesvos aim to build self-reliance, promote integration, and create opportunities that not only address immediate needs but also pave the way for sustainable, long-term growth. By focusing on education, vocational training, and active community involvement, we help residents regain agency, ownership and create a sense of belonging, ensuring that they have the tools and support needed to thrive.
