Introducing the Athens CampUs

The Athens CampUs is Movement on the Ground’s newest project, providing safe and supportive homes for young refugees turning 18 as they transition to adulthood in Greece. Building on our experience sheltering unaccompanied refugee minors (UAM) in Athens, the CampUs addresses a critical gap for those aging out of care, offering stability and pathways to independence.

Why It Matters

For years, we’ve provided care for over 250 unaccompanied minors in Athens. However, upon turning 18, many are suddenly left without support, facing risks of homelessness, exploitation, and social isolation. The Athens CampUs was created to offer continued guidance during this challenging phase.

Our Approach

The CampUs encourages responsibility and independence. Residents actively participate in maintaining their living spaces, setting goals, and engaging in their communities—transitioning from dependence to self-reliance with mentorship and support. Our team also provides comprehensive assistance to help residents navigate crucial areas of their lives. This includes access to educational and vocational training, help with securing legal employment, personalized mental and physical healthcare, and fostering a supportive community through recreational activities. Residents benefit from direct care provided by trained staff, who coordinate services such as Greek and English classes, job-readiness coaching, and even legal support when necessary.

The Challenges

  • Loss of Support: Upon turning 18, young refugees often lose access to essential services.
  • Risk of Homelessness: Many find themselves in unstable housing or living on the streets.
  • Limited Opportunities: Barriers such as legal hurdles and lack of support make securing stable employment difficult.
  • Vulnerability to Exploitation: Some resort to dangerous or exploitative means for survival.

  • Education and Training: Participants gain skills for independence, including education, job training, and practical life skills.
