Over the past month, we witnessed a series of saddening events unfold in and around Vial camp on #Chios. First and foremost, our hearts and thoughts go out to all of those – from close family and friends to the broader Vial camp community – who have had to endure these incidents, but also the ongoing challenging conditions of the camp.
In February of this year, we took the decision to work in Vial camp on Chios. We believed we could contribute our experience and knowledge with and for the Vial community as one thing was and continues to be clear, the living conditions of this camp are far from dignified.
From the moment we stepped foot on Chios, we have been – and will continue – doing all that is within our capacity to provide immediate relief and day-to-day solutions. But most importantly, we have been listening to and working with and for the community. Giving our ears to their concerns, struggles and worries. Giving our hands to help them create an immediate living situation that is a little bit better than their previous one. Giving our resources to help them feel more self-sufficient.
This past month on the island hasn’t been easy, and for us, reiterates the need for a humane and holistic solution for all people on the move. A home is what they need, but in the meantime, we will do what we can to enable a Camp to campUs. Where every human feels safe, included and connected while waiting. #bythemwestand
