Five Movement Moments: Athens FutbolNet, Abu Mustafa, Education, Malay and Tea Point

Stories

Looking back over the last week and a few moments of connectivity we shared with the communities we work with and for on the Greek islands.

Last week in Athens, the teenage boys of Thiseas and Nisos - the safe 'Homes' we run together with The HOME Project - attended the first FutbolNet session powered by our partner Barça Foundation! It was amazing to see them connect in a safe new environment and learn new values such as humility. ⚽

On Lesvos this week, we reconnected with Abu Mustafa; a 46-year-old Iraqi resident whom we knew since the day he reached the Greek islands. Over two years ago, together with his wife and three sons they travelled to Greece in search for safety. They shared with us again their concerns but also their hopes. A resilient family who remains positive that the best is yet to happen!

Last week in Athens took place the Youth to Youth educational programme in partnership with ACS Athens. A programme aiming to bring together students from different backgrounds, creating another safe space for them to learn new skills and enabling them to connect and feel included. The teenage boys get to team up with the ACS students on a day full of art, music, computer, language and athletic sessions.

Last week on Lesvos, we reconnected with Malalay. Together with her family she has been living on Lesvos for over two years. Malay is the mother of one of the children participating in our sports programme on the island. She's a big fan too, of these sports sessions bringing the children of the community together.🧡

What's better than a cup of tea in this cold winter? Maybe a cup of tea from a warm and beautifully painted Tea Point! Big shoutout to our amazing teams of community and visiting volunteers who stepped up to add some colours to this place that continues to bring the community's residents together on these cold days. 🍵

Not everyone has the same opportunities. That is why we continue to stand in solidarity with these people on the move on the Greek islands. These are some of the activities and programmes we run together with and for these communities in an effort to transform refugee camps into safe, healing and enabling environments. By starting a fundraiser on our Kentaa platform, you too can contribute to our community-led projects including; chai distribution, tailoring, education, sports and waste management.
