Five Movement Moments: Chios Kalostea, Maintenance, Abd Al Musawwar, Hussain Abdulghani and Ayman

Stories

Looking back over the last week and a few moments of connectivity we shared with the communities we work with and for on the Greek islands.

This week on Chios our teams of community and visiting volunteers joined efforts to fix both the interior and extrior of this rubb hall that will serve as the indoor Kalostea - community space - in winter. Big thanks to UNHCR who provided us with the new fabrics to install all around the tent. 👏

Also on Chios, last week our maintenance team has been fixing the floors and electricity and cleaning the living containers for new arrivals. Big shoutout to these amazing humans without whom none of this would have been possible! 🔨

This is Abdul Musawwar Habibi. He has been living Lesvos for two years and a half, where he stepped up as a community volunteer before having been granted asylum. He recently paid a visit to RIC Zervou to help - as usual - and share some of his knowledge and experience with the community. Thanks Abd 🧡🙏

Also on Samos, we met with Hussain Abdulghani. A Somali resident who joined our team of community volunteers. He helps bring the community together every day as a football coach. Together with Mohammad - our sports coach and photographer on Lesvos - who was visiting RIC Zervou, they connected and exchanged a few sports and coaching tips. It is amazing to see these teams across the Greek islands united! ⚽

Colourful mindsets also on Samos! Meet Ayman who came all the way from Syria looking for a better future. Ayman believes that colours can make a difference. This is why he stepped up to help our teams of community and visiting volunteers in adding more colours to the community space where the residents continue to connect. Thanks Ayman! 🎨

Not everyone has the same opportunities. That is why we continue to stand in solidarity with these people on the move on the Greek islands. These are some of the activities and programmes we run together with and for these communities in an effort to transform refugee camps into safe, healing and enabling environments. By starting a fundraiser on our Kentaa platform, you too can contribute to our community-led projects including; chai distribution, tailoring, education, sports and waste management.
