Global Handwashing Day 2021: Our future is at hand. Let’s move forward together.

Stories

“Our future is at hand. Let’s move forward together.” Washing our hands has been a part of our daily routine for as long as we can remember. This unprecedented year reminded us once again how vital hand hygiene and sanitisation is. More so, it emphasised the needs for collective action and how important it is for all communities to come together amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

In light of Global Handwashing Day today, together with our teams of community and visiting volunteers and coordinators on Lesvos, we are participating in UNICEF's initiative. In an effort to raise more awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing, especially in refugee camps.

Together with some residents, community volunteers and Maarten, a visiting volunteer from The Netherlands, we went creative, painting some of the new WASH containers. To mark the day, raise awareness of the importance of handwashing, and utilise an opportunity to bring more colour to the camp!

"Respect yourself and others" will also be the theme for children involved in our FutbolNet  session. To learn from the sports coaches the value of hand hygiene, how it can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout the whole community. Due to the heavy rain we're experiencing today on the Greek islands, this session is postponed to Monday however, and we're looking forward to it.

This is another way we are endeavouring to make the camp more healthy and liveable for our residents, until they find the ’safe’ home they came looking for. #bythemwestand
