New Dutch Ambassador to Greece Susanna Terstal visits Lesvos and Samos

Stories

This week the new Dutch Ambassador in #Greece, Susanna Terstal  visited the islands of Lesvos and Samos to witness the situation and learn more about the challenges people on the move are living through in both Mavrovouni and Vathy camps. This visit was an opportunity for her to interact directly with the refugees and listen to their stories.

Ambassador Terstal met with several actors including UNICEFArtsen zonder Grenzen and dutch NGOs Stichting Bootvluchteling and Because We Carry. She also visited the sites hosting the different programs and activities taking place within RIC #Lesvos. Such as the Hot Showers stations, the Cruyff Court by The Cruyff Foundation and the wood workshop. With Omid, our community volunteer, she discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and listened to the worries and concerns of the Afghan community. She also took the time with our coordinators Christine and Silke in our Camp Office to learn more about the informal educational and mental support programs we are running.

Such visits to the ground are of utmost importance for officials in order for them to get the full picture of such complex environments. We hope this visit can contribute to a more positive impact and more sustainable solutions for people on the move. With a priority to ensure humane and dignified reception centers, fast and clear asylum procedures and solidarity-driven relocation schemes to equally relieve Greece as a EU border member state. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship with all potential stakeholders who can help us achieve the changes we envision.
